Unraveling the Mystery of Medicare — What You Should Know

  • You may have choices in how you get your Medicare health coverage.
  • Medicare doesn't pay for all of your health care. You may be able to get help paying the costs that Medicare doesn't pay.
  • You can call 1-800-MEDICARE or visit the Medicare Web site for answers to your Medicare questions.
  • Private companies offer Medicare health plans, such as managed care plans and private fee-for-service plans. Each year, these companies have to choose whether to continue doing business with the Medicare program. If your plan intends to leave Medicare, it must let you know this, as well as whether there are other Medicare health plans offered in your area and what protections you have.
  • If your Medicare health plan decides not to stay with Medicare:
    • You are still covered under the Medicare program.
    • You can still join another Medicare health plan, if one is available in your area.
    • You can always return to the original Medicare plan.
    • You may be able to get a Medigap policy if you return to the original Medicare plan.
    • You will still get all Medicare covered services, no matter what you choose, but you my not have the same extra benefits.
