The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) proposed amendments to its regulations that implement the Controlled Substances Act to allow practitioners the option to write prescriptions for controlled substances electronically, as well to permit pharmacies to receive, dispense and archive these electronic prescriptions. The DEA's concerns with existing prescription systems led to the proposed regulations, which would reduce the number of prescription errors caused by illegible handwriting and misunderstood oral prescriptions. The DEA is considering two options to address electronic prescriptions: (a) electronically signed prescriptions with security controls and (b) modified digitally signed prescriptions.
